For expressive speech datasets however, we observe characteristic audio distortions. We demonstrate that such artefacts are introduced to the vocoder reconstruction by over-smooth mel-spectrogram predictions, which are induced by the choice of mean-squared-error (MSE) loss for training the mel-spectrogram decoder. With MSE loss FastSpeech 2 is limited to learn conditional averages of the training distribution, which might not lie close to a natural sample if the distribution still appears multimodal after all conditioning signals. To alleviate this problem, we introduce TVC-GMM, a mixture model of Trivariate-Chain Gaussian distributions, to model the residual multimodality. TVC-GMM reduces spectrogram smoothness and improves perceptual audio quality in particular for expressive datasets as shown by both objective and subjective evaluation.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.01442v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2306.01442v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"towards-robust-fastspeech-2-by-modelling","repo_url":"https://github.com/sony/ai-research-code","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"decoder","task_name":"Decoder"},{"task_slug":"text-to-speech","task_name":"Text to Speech"},{"task_slug":"text-to-speech-1","task_name":"text-to-speech"}],"methods":[{"method_slug":"attention","method_name":"Attention"},{"method_slug":"dense-connections","method_name":"Dense Connections"},{"method_slug":"dropout","method_name":"Dropout"},{"method_slug":"fastspeech-2","method_name":"FastSpeech 2"},{"method_slug":"layer-normalization","method_name":"Layer Normalization"},{"method_slug":"linear-layer","method_name":"Linear Layer"},{"method_slug":"multi-head-attention","method_name":"Multi-Head Attention"},{"method_slug":"position-wise-feed-forward-layer","method_name":"Position-Wise Feed-Forward Layer"},{"method_slug":"relu","method_name":"ReLU"},{"method_slug":"residual-connection","method_name":"Residual Connection"},{"method_slug":"softmax","method_name":"Softmax"}],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
