Whilst solutions to the Laplace equation in terms of Dirichlet integrals are readily available, it is still of theoretical and physical interest to understand the qualitative behavior of the potential, particularly with respect to critical points and equipotential surfaces. In this paper, we demonstrate how techniques from geometric topology can yield novel insights from the perspective of electrostatics. Specifically, we show that when the knot is sufficiently close to a planar projection, we prove a lower bound on the size of the critical set based on the projection's crossings, improving a 2019 result of the author. We then classify the equipotential surfaces of a charged knot distribution by tracking how the topology of the knot complement restricts the Morse surgeries associated to the critical points of the potential. keywords: Physical knot theory, electrostatics, Morse theory, dynamical systems, geometric topology, Cerf theory","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.03958v6","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2009.03958v6.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"links_only","authors_date_abstract":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license), from the Kaggle arXiv metadata snapshot of 2026-09-12"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"the-relationship-between-the-critical-sets","repo_url":"https://github.com/ml2437/knot-potential-surfaces","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
