We investigate how the nematode C. elegans\nresponds to time-varying mechanosensory signals using a high-throughput\noptogenetic assay and automated behavior quantification. In the prevailing\npicture of the touch circuit, the animal's behavior is determined by which\nneurons are stimulated and by the stimulus amplitude. In contrast, we find that\nthe behavioral response is tuned to temporal properties of mechanosensory\nsignals, like its integral and derivative, that extend over many seconds.\nMechanosensory signals, even in the same neurons, can be tailored to elicit\ndifferent behavioral responses. Moreover, we find that the animal's response\nalso depends on its behavioral context. Most dramatically, the animal ignores\nall tested mechanosensory stimuli during turns. Finally, we present a\nlinear-nonlinear model that predicts the animal's behavioral response to\nstimulus.","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/1803.04085v2","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/1803.04085v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"temporal-processing-and-context-dependency-in","repo_url":"https://github.com/leiferlab/liu-temporal-processing","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
