In this paper, we propose, for the first time in workflow analysis, a Multi-Stage Temporal Convolutional Network (MS-TCN) that performs hierarchical prediction refinement for surgical phase recognition. Causal, dilated convolutions allow for a large receptive field and online inference with smooth predictions even during ambiguous transitions. Our method is thoroughly evaluated on two datasets of laparoscopic cholecystectomy videos with and without the use of additional surgical tool information. Outperforming various state-of-the-art LSTM approaches, we verify the suitability of the proposed causal MS-TCN for surgical phase recognition.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.10751v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2003.10751v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"tecno-surgical-phase-recognition-with-multi","repo_url":"https://github.com/tobiascz/TeCNO","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"tecno-surgical-phase-recognition-with-multi","repo_url":"https://github.com/xjgaocs/Trans-SVNet","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"surgical-phase-recognition","task_name":"Surgical phase recognition"}],"methods":[{"method_slug":"1x1-convolution","method_name":"1x1 Convolution"},{"method_slug":"lstm","method_name":"LSTM"},{"method_slug":"sigmoid-activation","method_name":"Sigmoid Activation"},{"method_slug":"tanh-activation","method_name":"Tanh Activation"}],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[{"leaderboard":"/sota/surgical-phase-recognition-on-cholec80-1","task":"Surgical phase recognition","dataset":"Cholec80","model":"TCN","rank_in_archive_order":5,"of":6,"metrics":{"F1":"80.3"},"uses_additional_data":false}],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2003.10751","mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
