They can support fairness in computer-aided decision making and increase plausibility in data-driven scientific models. The seminal min-max (MM) neural network architecture ensures monotonicity, but often gets stuck in undesired local optima during training because of partial derivatives of the MM nonlinearities being zero. We propose a simple modification of the MM network using strictly-increasing smooth minimum and maximum functions that alleviates this problem. The resulting smooth min-max (SMM) network module inherits the asymptotic approximation properties from the MM architecture. It can be used within larger deep learning systems trained end-to-end. The SMM module is conceptually simple and computationally less demanding than state-of-the-art neural networks for monotonic modelling. Our experiments show that this does not come with a loss in generalization performance compared to alternative neural and non-neural approaches.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.01147v3","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2306.01147v3.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"smooth-monotonic-networks","repo_url":"https://github.com/christian-igel/smm","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"decision-making","task_name":"Decision Making"},{"task_slug":"fairness","task_name":"Fairness"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
