While being able to achieve good accuracies in various scene understanding tasks, previous methods often have low training speed and complex network architecture. In this paper, we address these problems by proposing an efficient end-to-end permutation invariant convolution for point cloud deep learning. Our simple yet effective convolution operator named ShellConv uses statistics from concentric spherical shells to define representative features and resolve the point order ambiguity, allowing traditional convolution to perform on such features. Based on ShellConv we further build an efficient neural network named ShellNet to directly consume the point clouds with larger receptive fields while maintaining less layers. We demonstrate the efficacy of ShellNet by producing state-of-the-art results on object classification, object part segmentation, and semantic scene segmentation while keeping the network very fast to train.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1908.06295v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/1908.06295v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"shellnet-efficient-point-cloud-convolutional","repo_url":"https://github.com/hkust-vgd/shellnet","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"tf","reach":{"status":"ok","spdx":"NOASSERTION"}}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"3d-point-cloud-classification","task_name":"3D Point Cloud Classification"},{"task_slug":"3d-semantic-segmentation","task_name":"3D Semantic Segmentation"},{"task_slug":"efficient-neural-network","task_name":"Efficient Neural Network"},{"task_slug":"segmentation","task_name":"Segmentation"},{"task_slug":"semantic-segmentation","task_name":"Semantic Segmentation"}],"methods":[{"method_slug":"convolution","method_name":"Convolution"},{"method_slug":"speed","method_name":"SPEED"}],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[{"leaderboard":"/sota/3d-point-cloud-classification-on-modelnet40","task":"3D Point Cloud Classification","dataset":"ModelNet40","model":"ShellNet","rank_in_archive_order":72,"of":111,"metrics":{"Overall Accuracy":"93.1"},"uses_additional_data":false},{"leaderboard":"/sota/3d-semantic-segmentation-on-dales","task":"3D Semantic Segmentation","dataset":"DALES","model":"ShellNet","rank_in_archive_order":9,"of":9,"metrics":{"Model size":"N/A","Overall Accuracy":"96.4","mIoU":"57.4"},"uses_additional_data":false},{"leaderboard":"/sota/semantic-segmentation-on-s3dis","task":"Semantic Segmentation","dataset":"S3DIS","model":"ShellNet","rank_in_archive_order":33,"of":54,"metrics":{"Mean IoU":"66.8","Number of params":"N/A"},"uses_additional_data":false},{"leaderboard":"/sota/semantic-segmentation-on-semantic3d","task":"Semantic Segmentation","dataset":"Semantic3D","model":"shellnet_v2","rank_in_archive_order":10,"of":17,"metrics":{"mIoU":"69.3%"},"uses_additional_data":false}],"syntology":{"syntology_url":"https://syntology.ai/paper/1908.06295","atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=1908.06295","mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
