However, handling confusing samples is nontrivial: discarding valuable confusing samples would compromise the model generalisation while using them for training would exacerbate the confirmation bias issue caused by inevitable mislabelling. To solve this problem, this paper proposes to use confusing samples proactively without label correction. Specifically, a virtual category (VC) is assigned to each confusing sample such that they can safely contribute to the model optimisation even without a concrete label. It is attributed to specifying the embedding distance between the training sample and the virtual category as the lower bound of the inter-class distance. Moreover, we also modify the localisation loss to allow high-quality boundaries for location regression. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed VC learning significantly surpasses the state-of-the-art, especially with small amounts of available labels.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2207.03433v2","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2207.03433v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"semi-supervised-object-detection-via-virtual-1","repo_url":"https://github.com/geoffreychen777/vc","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"pytorch","reach":{"status":"ok"}}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"object","task_name":"Object"},{"task_slug":"object-detection","task_name":"Object Detection"},{"task_slug":"semi-supervised-object-detection","task_name":"Semi-Supervised Object Detection"},{"task_slug":"object-detection-1","task_name":"object-detection"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[{"leaderboard":"/sota/semi-supervised-object-detection-on-coco-0-5","task":"Semi-Supervised Object Detection","dataset":"COCO 0.5% labeled data","model":"VC","rank_in_archive_order":3,"of":5,"metrics":{"mAP":"19.46"},"uses_additional_data":false},{"leaderboard":"/sota/semi-supervised-object-detection-on-coco-1","task":"Semi-Supervised Object Detection","dataset":"COCO 1% labeled data","model":"VC","rank_in_archive_order":8,"of":22,"metrics":{"mAP":"23.86"},"uses_additional_data":false},{"leaderboard":"/sota/semi-supervised-object-detection-on-coco-10","task":"Semi-Supervised Object Detection","dataset":"COCO 10% labeled data","model":"VC","rank_in_archive_order":14,"of":27,"metrics":{"detector":"FasterRCNN-Res50","mAP":"34.82"},"uses_additional_data":false},{"leaderboard":"/sota/semi-supervised-object-detection-on-coco-2","task":"Semi-Supervised Object Detection","dataset":"COCO 2% labeled data","model":"VC","rank_in_archive_order":10,"of":19,"metrics":{"mAP":"27.70"},"uses_additional_data":false},{"leaderboard":"/sota/semi-supervised-object-detection-on-coco-5","task":"Semi-Supervised Object Detection","dataset":"COCO 5% labeled data","model":"VC","rank_in_archive_order":11,"of":23,"metrics":{"mAP":"32.05"},"uses_additional_data":false}],"syntology":{"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2207.03433","mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
