SCDE is a human-created sentence cloze dataset, collected from public school English examinations. Our task requires a model to fill up multiple blanks in a passage from a shared candidate set with distractors designed by English teachers. Experimental results demonstrate that this task requires the use of non-local, discourse-level context beyond the immediate sentence neighborhood. The blanks require joint solving and significantly impair each other's context. Furthermore, through ablations, we show that the distractors are of high quality and make the task more challenging. Our experiments show that there is a significant performance gap between advanced models (72%) and humans (87%), encouraging future models to bridge this gap.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.12934v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2004.12934v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"scde-sentence-cloze-dataset-with-high-quality","repo_url":"https://github.com/shawnkx/SCDE","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"question-answering","task_name":"Question Answering"},{"task_slug":"sentence","task_name":"Sentence"},{"task_slug":"high","task_name":"Vocal Bursts Intensity Prediction"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[{"slug":"scde","name":"SCDE","full_name":"SCDE"}],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[{"leaderboard":"/sota/question-answering-on-scde-1","task":"Question Answering","dataset":"SCDE","model":"bert-large-uncased + APN","rank_in_archive_order":3,"of":3,"metrics":{"BA":"0.717","DE":"0.661","PA":"0.299"},"uses_additional_data":false}],"syntology":{"syntology_url":"https://syntology.ai/paper/2004.12934","atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2004.12934","mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
