Such normalization of the data, however, may affect\nthe selection of biomarkers and the biological interpretation of results in\nunforeseen ways.\n  Results: First, we study how the outcome of hypothesis tests for differential\nmetabolite concentration is affected by the choice of scale. Furthermore, we\nobserve this interdependence also for different classification approaches.\nSecond, to overcome this problem and establish a scale-invariant biomarker\ndiscovery algorithm, we extend linear zero-sum regression to the logistic\nregression framework and show in two applications to ${}^1$H NMR-based\nmetabolomics data how this approach overcomes the scaling problem.\n  Availability: Logistic zero-sum regression is available as an R package as\nwell as a high-performance computing implementation that can be downloaded at\nhttps://github.com/rehbergT/zeroSum","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/1703.07724v1","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/1703.07724v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"scale-invariant-biomarker-discovery-in-urine","repo_url":"https://github.com/rehbergT/zeroSum","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"regression-1","task_name":"regression"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
