However, new methods for analyzing high-dimensional areal data are still scarce. Here, we propose a scalable Bayesian modeling approach for smoothing mortality (or incidence) risks in high-dimensional data, that is, when the number of small areas is very large. The method is implemented in the R add-on package bigDM. Model fitting and inference is based on the idea of \"divide and conquer\" and use integrated nested Laplace approximations and numerical integration. We analyze the proposal's empirical performance in a comprehensive simulation study that consider two model-free settings. Finally, the methodology is applied to analyze male colorectal cancer mortality in Spanish municipalities showing its benefits with regard to the standard approach in terms of goodness of fit and computational time.","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/2007.07724v1","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/2007.07724v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"links_only","authors_date_abstract":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license), from the Kaggle arXiv metadata snapshot of 2026-09-12"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"scalable-bayesian-modeling-for-smoothing","repo_url":"https://github.com/spatialstatisticsupna/bigDM","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
