Poly-YOLO builds on the original ideas of YOLOv3 and removes two of its weaknesses: a large amount of rewritten labels and inefficient distribution of anchors. Poly-YOLO reduces the issues by aggregating features from a light SE-Darknet-53 backbone with a hypercolumn technique, using stairstep upsampling, and produces a single scale output with high resolution. In comparison with YOLOv3, Poly-YOLO has only 60% of its trainable parameters but improves mAP by a relative 40%. We also present Poly-YOLO lite with fewer parameters and a lower output resolution. It has the same precision as YOLOv3, but it is three times smaller and twice as fast, thus suitable for embedded devices. Finally, Poly-YOLO performs instance segmentation using bounding polygons. The network is trained to detect size-independent polygons defined on a polar grid. Vertices of each polygon are being predicted with their confidence, and therefore Poly-YOLO produces polygons with a varying number of vertices.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2005.13243v2","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2005.13243v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"poly-yolo-higher-speed-more-precise-detection","repo_url":"https://gitlab.com/irafm-ai/poly-yolo","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"tf","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"poly-yolo-higher-speed-more-precise-detection","repo_url":"https://github.com/BYLi-AI/poly-yolo","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"tf","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"instance-segmentation","task_name":"Instance Segmentation"},{"task_slug":"semantic-segmentation","task_name":"Semantic Segmentation"}],"methods":[{"method_slug":"1x1-convolution","method_name":"1x1 Convolution"},{"method_slug":"average-pooling","method_name":"Average Pooling"},{"method_slug":"batch-normalization","method_name":"Batch Normalization"},{"method_slug":"convolution","method_name":"Convolution"},{"method_slug":"global-average-pooling","method_name":"Global Average Pooling"},{"method_slug":"logistic-regression","method_name":"Logistic Regression"},{"method_slug":"residual-connection","method_name":"Residual Connection"},{"method_slug":"softmax","method_name":"Softmax"},{"method_slug":"yolov3","method_name":"YOLOv3"},{"method_slug":"k-means-clustering","method_name":"k-Means Clustering"}],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
