But the curse of dimensionality will always prevent us to try out extensively all the hypotheses. There is a vast literature on efficient methods to construct a Design of Experiments (DoE) such as low discrepancy sequences and optimized designs. Classically, the performance of these methods is assessed using a discrepancy metric. Having a fast discrepancy measure is of prime importance if ones want to optimize a design. This work proposes a new methodology to assess the quality of a random sampling by using a flavor of Newcomb-Benford's law. The performance of the new metric is compared to classical discrepancy measures and showed to offer similar information at a fraction of the computational cost of traditional discrepancy measures.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2103.08705v2","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2103.08705v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"links_only","authors_date_abstract":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license), from the Kaggle arXiv metadata snapshot of 2026-09-12"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"newcomb-benford-s-law-as-a-fast-ersatz-of","repo_url":"https://github.com/tupui/NB-discrepancy","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
