However, it is usually unclear how neural networks make decisions, and current methods that try to provide interpretability to neural networks are not robust enough.\r\n\r\nWe introduce neuralGAM, a fully explainable neural network framework based on Generalized Additive Models, which trains a different neural network to estimate and visualize the contribution of each feature to the response variable. In contrast to other Neural Additive Models implementations, in neuralGAM neural networks are trained independently leveraging the local scoring and backfitting algorithms to ensure that the Generalized Additive Model converges and it is additive. The resultant model is a highly accurate and explainable deep learning model, which can be used for high-risk AI practices where decision-making should be based on accountable and interpretable algorithms.\r\n\r\nneuralGAM is also available as an R package at the CRAN: https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/neuralGAM/index.html","url_abs":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11222-024-10461-1","url_pdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s11222-024-10461-1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"neuralgam-explainable-generalized-additive","repo_url":"https://github.com/inesortega/neuralgam","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"tf","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"neuralgam-explainable-generalized-additive","repo_url":"https://github.com/inesortega/pyNeuralGAM","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"tf","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"additive-models","task_name":"Additive models"},{"task_slug":"anomaly-detection","task_name":"Anomaly Detection"},{"task_slug":"decision-making","task_name":"Decision Making"}],"methods":[{"method_slug":"gam","method_name":"GAM"}],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
