This paper proposes a new SOD dataset consisting of 39,070 images including 137,121 bird instances, which is called the Small Object Detection for Spotting Birds (SOD4SB) dataset. The detail of the challenge with the SOD4SB dataset is introduced in this paper. In total, 223 participants joined this challenge. This paper briefly introduces the award-winning methods. The dataset, the baseline code, and the website for evaluation on the public testset are publicly available.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.09143v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2307.09143v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"mva2023-small-object-detection-challenge-for","repo_url":"https://github.com/iim-ttij/mva2023smallobjectdetection4spottingbirds","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"object","task_name":"Object"},{"task_slug":"object-detection","task_name":"Object Detection"},{"task_slug":"small-object-detection","task_name":"Small Object Detection"},{"task_slug":"object-detection-1","task_name":"object-detection"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[{"slug":"sod4sb","name":"SOD4SB","full_name":"Small Object Detection for Spotting Birds"}],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[{"leaderboard":"/sota/small-object-detection-on-sod4sb-private-test","task":"Small Object Detection","dataset":"SOD4SB Private Test","model":"DL method (YOLOv8 + Ensamble)","rank_in_archive_order":3,"of":5,"metrics":{"AP50":"22.9"},"uses_additional_data":true},{"leaderboard":"/sota/small-object-detection-on-sod4sb-private-test","task":"Small Object Detection","dataset":"SOD4SB Private Test","model":"E2 method (Normalized Gaussian Wasserstein Distance + Switch Hard Augmentation + Multi scale train + Weight Moving Average + CenterNet + VarifocalNet)","rank_in_archive_order":5,"of":5,"metrics":{"AP50":"22.1"},"uses_additional_data":true},{"leaderboard":"/sota/small-object-detection-on-sod4sb-public-test-1","task":"Small Object Detection","dataset":"SOD4SB Public Test","model":"DL method (YOLOv8 + Ensamble)","rank_in_archive_order":3,"of":5,"metrics":{"AP50":"73.1"},"uses_additional_data":true},{"leaderboard":"/sota/small-object-detection-on-sod4sb-public-test-1","task":"Small Object Detection","dataset":"SOD4SB Public Test","model":"E2 method (Normalized Gaussian Wasserstein Distance + Switch Hard Augmentation + Multi scale train + Weight Moving Average + CenterNet + VarifocalNet)","rank_in_archive_order":5,"of":5,"metrics":{"AP50":"69.6"},"uses_additional_data":true}],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
