Manifold learning provides a low-dimensional embedding and intrinsic coordinates for the parametrization of data on the Poincar\\'e section, facilitating the construction of return maps with well defined symbolic dynamics. The method is illustrated by numerical examples for the R\\\"ossler attractor and the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. For the latter we present the reduction of the high-dimensional, continuous-time flow to dynamics on one- and two two-dimensional Poincar\\'e sections. We show that in the two-dimensional embedding case the attractor is organized by one-dimensional unstable manifolds of short periodic orbits. In that case, the dynamics can be approximated by a map on a tree which can in turn be reduced to a trimodal map of the unit interval. In order to test the limits of the one-dimensional map approximation we apply classical kneading theory in order to systematically detect all periodic orbits of the system up to any given topological length.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2105.09888v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2105.09888v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"links_only","authors_date_abstract":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license), from the Kaggle arXiv metadata snapshot of 2026-09-12"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"manifold-learning-of-poincare-sections","repo_url":"https://github.com/vasimos/poinc-man","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
