Such varieties are often low-resource, and hence do not benefit from contemporary NLP solutions, MT included. We propose a general framework to rapidly adapt MT systems to generate language varieties that are close to, but different from, the standard target language, using no parallel (source--variety) data. This also includes adaptation of MT systems to low-resource typologically-related target languages. We experiment with adapting an English--Russian MT system to generate Ukrainian and Belarusian, an English--Norwegian Bokm{\\aa}l system to generate Nynorsk, and an English--Arabic system to generate four Arabic dialects, obtaining significant improvements over competitive baselines.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2106.06797v2","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2106.06797v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"machine-translation","task_name":"Machine Translation"},{"task_slug":"translation","task_name":"Translation"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2106.06797","mcp":{"get_harvested_code_for_paper":{"arxiv_id":"2106.06797"}},"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers","read_at":"2026-09-24T18:15:14+00:00","read_at_is":"when the build read Syntology's graph, not when any sample ran","claim":"Per-sample execution status on synthesized fixtures; not a correctness claim about the paper.
