Applying Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools to research level mathematical articles is both challenging, since it is a highly specialized domain which mixes natural language and mathematical formulae. It is also an important requirement for developing tools for mathematical information retrieval and computer-assisted theorem proving. We release a dataset for the task, consisting of over 180k statement-proof pairs extracted from mathematical research articles. We carry out preliminary experiments to assess the difficulty of the task. We first experiment with two bag-of-words baselines. We show that considering the assignment problem globally and using weighted bipartite matching algorithms helps a lot in tackling the task. Finally, we introduce a self-attention-based model that can be trained either locally or globally and outperforms baselines by a wide margin.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2102.02110v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2102.02110v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"learning-to-match-mathematical-statements","repo_url":"https://gitlab.com/mcoavoux/statement_proof_matching","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"learning-to-match-mathematical-statements","repo_url":"https://github.com/waylonli/match","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"articles","task_name":"Articles"},{"task_slug":"automated-theorem-proving","task_name":"Automated Theorem Proving"},{"task_slug":"information-retrieval","task_name":"Information Retrieval"},{"task_slug":"retrieval","task_name":"Retrieval"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
