Compared to previously studied indicators of generalization, we show that layer rotation has the additional benefit of being easily monitored and controlled, as well as having a network-independent optimum: the training procedures during which all layers' weights reach a cosine distance of 1 from their initialization consistently outperform other configurations -by up to 20% test accuracy. Finally, our results also suggest that the study of layer rotation can provide a unified framework to explain the impact of weight decay and adaptive gradient methods on generalization.","url_abs":"https://openreview.net/forum?id=B1g4DEB234","url_pdf":"https://openreview.net/pdf?id=B1g4DEB234","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"layer-rotation-a-surprisingly-simple","repo_url":"https://github.com/anonymousdlresearch/layer-rotation","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"tf","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
