Specifically, by injecting a small number of maliciously constructed inputs into the training set, an adversary is able to plant a backdoor into the trained model. This backdoor can then be activated during inference by a backdoor trigger to fully control the model's behavior. While such attacks are very effective, they crucially rely on the adversary injecting arbitrary inputs that are---often blatantly---mislabeled. Such samples would raise suspicion upon human inspection, potentially revealing the attack. Thus, for backdoor attacks to remain undetected, it is crucial that they maintain label-consistency---the condition that injected inputs are consistent with their labels. In this work, we leverage adversarial perturbations and generative models to execute efficient, yet label-consistent, backdoor attacks. Our approach is based on injecting inputs that appear plausible, yet are hard to classify, hence causing the model to rely on the (easier-to-learn) backdoor trigger.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1912.02771v2","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/1912.02771v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"label-consistent-backdoor-attacks","repo_url":"https://github.com/MadryLab/label-consistent-backdoor-code","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"tf","reach":{"status":"ok","spdx":"MIT"}},{"paper_slug":"label-consistent-backdoor-attacks","repo_url":"https://github.com/xandery-geek/BackdoorAttacks","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=1912.02771","mcp":{"get_harvested_code_for_paper":{"arxiv_id":"1912.02771"}},"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers","read_at":"2026-09-24T18:15:14+00:00","read_at_is":"when the build read Syntology's graph, not when any sample ran","claim":"Per-sample execution status on synthesized fixtures; not a correctness claim about the paper.
