In this work, we investigate a partially observable MARL problem in which agents are cooperative. To enable the development of tractable algorithms, we introduce the concept of an information state embedding that serves to compress agents' histories. We quantify how the compression error influences the resulting value functions for decentralized control. Furthermore, we propose an instance of the embedding based on recurrent neural networks (RNNs). The embedding is then used as an approximate information state, and can be fed into any MARL algorithm. The proposed embed-then-learn pipeline opens the black-box of existing (partially observable) MARL algorithms, allowing us to establish some theoretical guarantees (error bounds of value functions) while still achieving competitive performance with many end-to-end approaches.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.01098v3","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2004.01098v3.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"information-state-embedding-in-partially","repo_url":"https://github.com/xizeroplus/marl-embedding","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"multi-agent-reinforcement-learning","task_name":"Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning"},{"task_slug":"reinforcement-learning","task_name":"Reinforcement Learning"},{"task_slug":"reinforcement-learning-1","task_name":"Reinforcement Learning (RL)"},{"task_slug":"reinforcement-learning-2","task_name":"reinforcement-learning"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2004.01098","mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
