Despite their common use and broad utility, no\nunified framework has emerged for measuring, comparing and partitioning\ndiversity. The introduction of information theory into diversity measurement\nhas laid the foundations, but the framework is incomplete without the ability\nto partition diversity, which is central to fundamental questions across the\nlife sciences: How do we prioritise communities for conservation? How do we\nidentify reservoirs and sources of pathogenic organisms? How do we measure\necological disturbance arising from climate change?\n  The lack of a common framework means that diversity measures from different\nfields have conflicting fundamental properties, allowing conclusions reached to\ndepend on the measure chosen. This conflict is unnecessary and unhelpful. A\nmathematically consistent framework would transform disparate fields by\ndelivering scientific insights in a common language. It would also allow the\ntransfer of theoretical and practical developments between fields.\n  We meet this need, providing a versatile unified framework for partitioning\nbiological diversity. It encompasses any kind of similarity between\nindividuals, from functional to genetic, allowing comparisons between\nqualitatively different kinds of diversity. Where existing partitioning\nmeasures aggregate information across the whole population, our approach\npermits the direct comparison of subcommunities, allowing us to pinpoint\ndistinct, diverse or representative subcommunities and investigate population\nsubstructure. The framework is provided as a ready-to-use R package to easily\ntest our approach.","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/1404.6520v3","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/1404.6520v3.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"how-to-partition-diversity","repo_url":"https://github.com/EcoJulia/Diversity.jl","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"how-to-partition-diversity","repo_url":"https://github.com/UnofficialJuliaMirror/Diversity.jl-d3d5718d-52de-57ab-b67a-eca7fd6175a4","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"how-to-partition-diversity","repo_url":"https://github.com/UnofficialJuliaMirrorSnapshots/Diversity.jl-d3d5718d-52de-57ab-b67a-eca7fd6175a4","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"how-to-partition-diversity","repo_url":"https://github.com/arnaoutlab/diversity","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"how-to-partition-diversity","repo_url":"https://github.com/boydorr/rdiversity","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"how-to-partition-diversity","repo_url":"https://github.com/richardreeve/Diversity.jl","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"diversity","task_name":"Diversity"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
