The outcome of a classification-based two-sample test remains a rejection decision, which is not always informative since the null hypothesis is seldom strictly true. Therefore, when a test rejects, it would be beneficial to provide an additional quantity serving as a refined measure of distributional difference. In this work, we introduce a framework for the construction of high-probability lower bounds on the total variation distance. These bounds are based on a one-dimensional projection, such as a classification or regression method, and can be interpreted as the minimal fraction of samples pointing towards a distributional difference. We further derive asymptotic power and detection rates of two proposed estimators and discuss potential uses through an application to a reanalysis climate dataset.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2005.06006v5","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2005.06006v5.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"links_only","authors_date_abstract":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license), from the Kaggle arXiv metadata snapshot of 2026-09-12"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"high-probability-lower-bounds-for-the-total","repo_url":"https://github.com/lorismichel/HPLB","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
