We consider a generalization of the original Kermack and McKendrick model in which the size of the populations differs in space. The use of local spatial dependence yields a system of partial-differential equations with integral terms. The uniqueness and qualitative properties of the continuous model are analyzed. Furthermore, different spatial and temporal discretizations are employed, and step-size restrictions for the discrete model's positivity, monotonicity preservation, and population conservation are investigated. We provide sufficient conditions under which high-order numerical schemes preserve the stability of the computational process and provide sufficiently accurate numerical approximations. Computational experiments verify the convergence and accuracy of the numerical methods.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1909.01330v3","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/1909.01330v3.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"links_only","authors_date_abstract":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license), from the Kaggle arXiv metadata snapshot of 2026-09-12"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"high-order-discretizations-for-spatial","repo_url":"https://github.com/hadjimy/spatial-SIR_RR","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
