The proposed Global and Selective Attention Network (GSANet) features Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) with a novel sparsemax global attention and a novel selective attention that deploys a condensation and diffusion mechanism to aggregate the multi-scale contextual information from the extracted deep features. A selective attention decoder is also proposed to process the GSA-ASPP outputs for optimizing the softmax volume. We are the first to benchmark the performance of semantic segmentation networks with the low-complexity feature extraction network (FXN) MobileNetEdge, that is optimized for low latency on edge devices. We show that GSANet can result in more accurate segmentation with MobileNetEdge, as well as with strong FXNs, such as Xception. GSANet improves the state-of-art semantic segmentation accuracy on both the ADE20k and the Cityscapes datasets.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.00830v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2003.00830v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"decoder","task_name":"Decoder"},{"task_slug":"segmentation","task_name":"Segmentation"},{"task_slug":"semantic-segmentation","task_name":"Semantic Segmentation"}],"methods":[{"method_slug":"1x1-convolution","method_name":"1x1 Convolution"},{"method_slug":"average-pooling","method_name":"Average Pooling"},{"method_slug":"convolution","method_name":"Convolution"},{"method_slug":"dense-connections","method_name":"Dense Connections"},{"method_slug":"depthwise-convolution","method_name":"Depthwise Convolution"},{"method_slug":"depthwise-separable-convolution","method_name":"Depthwise Separable Convolution"},{"method_slug":"global-average-pooling","method_name":"Global Average Pooling"},{"method_slug":"igsa","method_name":"IGSA"},{"method_slug":"max-pooling","method_name":"Max Pooling"},{"method_slug":"pointwise-convolution","method_name":"Pointwise Convolution"},{"method_slug":"relu","method_name":"ReLU"},{"method_slug":"residual-connection","method_name":"Residual Connection"},{"method_slug":"softmax","method_name":"Softmax"},{"method_slug":"sparsemax","method_name":"Sparsemax"},{"method_slug":"spatial-pyramid-pooling","method_name":"Spatial Pyramid Pooling"}],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[{"slug":"igsa","name":"IGSA","full_name":"Improved Gravitational Search algorithm"}],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
