With the advent of new and complex types of data for which the ICC is not defined, there is a need for new ways to assess reliability. To meet this need, we propose a new distance-based intraclass correlation coefficient (dbICC), defined in terms of arbitrary distances among observations. We introduce a bias correction to improve the coverage of bootstrap confidence intervals for the dbICC, and demonstrate its efficacy via simulation. We illustrate the proposed method by analyzing the test-retest reliability of brain connectivity matrices derived from a set of repeated functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. The Spearman-Brown formula, which shows how more intensive measurement increases reliability, is extended to encompass the dbICC.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1912.07137v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/1912.07137v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"links_only","authors_date_abstract":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license), from the Kaggle arXiv metadata snapshot of 2026-09-12"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"generalized-reliability-based-on-distances","repo_url":"https://github.com/wtagr/dbicc","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
