In this paper, we present rigorous generalization guarantees for imitation learning by leveraging the Probably Approximately Correct (PAC)-Bayes framework to provide upper bounds on the expected cost of policies in novel environments. We propose a two-stage training method where a latent policy distribution is first embedded with multi-modal expert behavior using a conditional variational autoencoder, and then \"fine-tuned\" in new training environments to explicitly optimize the generalization bound. We demonstrate strong generalization bounds and their tightness relative to empirical performance in simulation for (i) grasping diverse mugs, (ii) planar pushing with visual feedback, and (iii) vision-based indoor navigation, as well as through hardware experiments for the two manipulation tasks.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.01913v2","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2008.01913v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"generalization-guarantees-for-multi-modal","repo_url":"https://github.com/irom-lab/PAC-Imitation","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"generalization-guarantees-for-multi-modal","repo_url":"https://github.com/irom-lab/dragen","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"generalization-bounds","task_name":"Generalization Bounds"},{"task_slug":"imitation-learning","task_name":"Imitation Learning"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
