We present a novel generalized varying-coefficient model that accounts for within-subject variability and simultaneously clusters varying-coefficient functions, without restricting the number of clusters nor overfitting the data. In the analysis of a heterogeneous series of binary data, the model extracts population-level fixed effects, cluster-level varying effects, and subject-level random effects. Various simulation studies show the validity and utility of the proposed method to correctly specify cluster-specific varying-coefficients when the number of clusters is unknown. The proposed method is applied to a heterogeneous series of binary data in the German Socioeconomic Panel (GSOEP) study, where we identify three major clusters demonstrating the different varying effects of socioeconomic predictors as a function of age on the working status.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.10273v2","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2210.10273v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"links_only","authors_date_abstract":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license), from the Kaggle arXiv metadata snapshot of 2026-09-12"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"functional-clustering-methods-for-binary","repo_url":"https://github.com/jwsohn612/fvcc","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
