An\nimportant biological aspect of these studies is discerning which selection\npressures favor the evolution of grouping behavior. In the past decade,\nresearchers have begun using evolutionary computation to study the evolutionary\neffects of these selection pressures in predator-prey models. The selfish herd\nhypothesis states that concentrated groups arise because prey selfishly attempt\nto place their conspecifics between themselves and the predator, thus causing\nan endless cycle of movement toward the center of the group. Using an\nevolutionary model of a predator-prey system, we show that how predators attack\nis critical to the evolution of the selfish herd. Following this discovery, we\nshow that density-dependent predation provides an abstraction of Hamilton's\noriginal formulation of ``domains of danger.'' Finally, we verify that\ndensity-dependent predation provides a sufficient selective advantage for prey\nto evolve the selfish herd in response to predation by coevolving predators.\nThus, our work corroborates Hamilton's selfish herd hypothesis in a digital\nevolutionary model, refines the assumptions of the selfish herd hypothesis, and\ngeneralizes the domain of danger concept to density-dependent predation.","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/1310.6012v2","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/1310.6012v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"evolution-of-swarming-behavior-is-shaped-by","repo_url":"https://github.com/adamilab/eos-selfish-herd","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"evolution-of-swarming-behavior-is-shaped-by","repo_url":"https://github.com/adversarial-scan/MarkovNetwork_0","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"evolution-of-swarming-behavior-is-shaped-by","repo_url":"https://github.com/adversarial-scan/MarkovNetwork_1","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"evolution-of-swarming-behavior-is-shaped-by","repo_url":"https://github.com/adversarial-scan/MarkovNetwork_2","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"evolution-of-swarming-behavior-is-shaped-by","repo_url":"https://github.com/adversarial-scan/MarkovNetwork_5","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"evolution-of-swarming-behavior-is-shaped-by","repo_url":"https://github.com/adversarial-scan/MarkovNetwork_6","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"evolution-of-swarming-behavior-is-shaped-by","repo_url":"https://github.com/rhiever/MarkovNetwork","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
