However, female preferences\nmight deplete genetic variance and make choice redundant. Additionally,\nhigh-condition males sometime produce low-fitness offspring, for example\nbecause of environmental turnover and gene-by-environment interactions (GEIs)\nfor fitness, or because fit males carry sexually-antagonistic alleles causing\nthem to produce unfit daughters. Here, we extend previous theory by\ninvestigating the evolution of female mate choice in a spatially explicit\nevolutionary simulation implementing both GEIs and intralocus sexual conflict\n(IASC), under sex-specific hard or soft selection. We show that IASC can weaken\nfemale preferences for high-condition males or even cause a preference for\nmales in low condition, depending on the relative benefits of producing\nwell-adapted sons versus daughters, which in turn depends on the relative\nhardness of selection on males and females. We discuss the relevance of our\nresults to conservation genetics and empirical evolutionary biology.","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/1807.09131v1","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/1807.09131v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"evolution-of-female-choice-under-intralocus","repo_url":"https://github.com/XiangyiLi/Evolution-of-female-choice-under-intralocus-sexual-conflict-and-genotype-by-environment-interactions","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
