Such explanations provide individuals adversely impacted by predicted outcomes (e.g., an applicant denied a loan) with recourse -- i.e., a description of how they can change their features to obtain a positive outcome. We propose a novel algorithm that leverages adversarial training and PAC confidence sets to learn models that theoretically guarantee recourse to affected individuals with high probability without sacrificing accuracy. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach via extensive experiments on real data.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2011.06146v3","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2011.06146v3.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"ensuring-actionable-recourse-via-adversarial","repo_url":"https://github.com/alexisjihyeross/adversarial_recourse","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"pytorch","reach":{"status":"unanswered"}}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"decision-making","task_name":"Decision Making"},{"task_slug":null,"task_name":"counterfactual"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2011.06146","mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
