Specifically, state-based CRDTs ensure convergence through disseminating the en- tire state, that may be large, and merging it to other replicas; whereas operation-based CRDTs disseminate operations (i.e., small states) assuming an exactly-once reliable dissemination layer. We introduce Delta State Conflict-Free Replicated Datatypes ({\\delta}-CRDT) that can achieve the best of both worlds: small messages with an incremental nature, as in operation-based CRDTs, disseminated over unreliable communication channels, as in traditional state-based CRDTs. This is achieved by defining {\\delta}-mutators to return a delta-state, typically with a much smaller size than the full state, that is joined to both: local and remote states. We introduce the {\\delta}-CRDT framework, and we explain it through establishing a correspondence to current state-based CRDTs. In addition, we present an anti-entropy algorithm that ensures causal consistency, and we introduce two {\\delta}-CRDT specifications of well-known replicated datatypes.","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/1410.2803v2","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/1410.2803v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"links_only","authors_date_abstract":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license), from the Kaggle arXiv metadata snapshot of 2026-09-12"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"efficient-state-based-crdts-by-delta-mutation","repo_url":"https://github.com/CBaquero/delta-enabled-crdts","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"efficient-state-based-crdts-by-delta-mutation","repo_url":"https://github.com/asonge/loom","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"efficient-state-based-crdts-by-delta-mutation","repo_url":"https://github.com/rgrover/deltaCRDT","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
