These domains, however, are inherently sensitive to privacy concerns, as personal and confidential data are involved. With increasing demand for the right to be forgotten, particularly under regulations such as GDPR and CCPA, the ability to perform machine unlearning has become crucial for Random Forests. However, insufficient attention was paid to this topic, and existing approaches face difficulties in being applied to real-world scenarios. Addressing this gap, we propose the DynFrs framework designed to enable efficient machine unlearning in Random Forests while preserving predictive accuracy. Dynfrs leverages subsampling method Occ(q) and a lazy tag strategy Lzy, and is still adaptable to any Random Forest variant. In essence, Occ(q) ensures that each sample in the training set occurs only in a proportion of trees so that the impact of deleting samples is limited, and Lzy delays the reconstruction of a tree node until necessary, thereby avoiding unnecessary modifications on tree structures. In experiments, applying Dynfrs on Extremely Randomized Trees yields substantial improvements, achieving orders of magnitude faster unlearning performance and better predictive accuracy than existing machine unlearning methods for Random Forests.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.01588v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2410.01588v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"dynfrs-an-efficient-framework-for-machine","repo_url":"https://github.com/shurongwang/DynFrs","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"none","reach":{"status":"ok"}}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"classification-1","task_name":"Classification"},{"task_slug":"machine-unlearning","task_name":"Machine Unlearning"}],"methods":[{"method_slug":"attention","method_name":"Attention"},{"method_slug":"softmax","method_name":"Softmax"}],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2410.01588","mcp":{"get_harvested_code_for_paper":{"arxiv_id":"2410.01588"}},"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers","read_at":"2026-09-24T18:15:14+00:00","read_at_is":"when the build read Syntology's graph, not when any sample ran","claim":"Per-sample execution status on synthesized fixtures; not a correctness claim about the paper.
