However, as these models decode in a left-to-right way, they do not have access to context on the right. We leverage both left and right context by applying BERT as an external language model to seq2seq ASR through knowledge distillation. In our proposed method, BERT generates soft labels to guide the training of seq2seq ASR. Furthermore, we leverage context beyond the current utterance as input to BERT. Experimental evaluations show that our method significantly improves the ASR performance from the seq2seq baseline on the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ). Knowledge distillation from BERT outperforms that from a transformer LM that only looks at left context. We also show the effectiveness of leveraging context beyond the current utterance. Our method outperforms other LM application approaches such as n-best rescoring and shallow fusion, while it does not require extra inference cost.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.03822v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2008.03822v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"distilling-the-knowledge-of-bert-for-sequence","repo_url":"https://github.com/hfutami/distill-bert-for-seq2seq-asr","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"pytorch","reach":{"status":"ok"}}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"automatic-speech-recognition-2","task_name":"Automatic Speech Recognition"},{"task_slug":"automatic-speech-recognition","task_name":"Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR)"},{"task_slug":"knowledge-distillation","task_name":"Knowledge Distillation"},{"task_slug":"language-modeling","task_name":"Language Modeling"},{"task_slug":"language-modelling","task_name":"Language Modelling"},{"task_slug":"speech-recognition","task_name":"Speech Recognition"},{"task_slug":"speech-recognition-1","task_name":"speech-recognition"}],"methods":[{"method_slug":"adam","method_name":"Adam"},{"method_slug":"attention","method_name":"Attention"},{"method_slug":"attention-dropout","method_name":"Attention Dropout"},{"method_slug":"bert","method_name":"BERT"},{"method_slug":"dense-connections","method_name":"Dense Connections"},{"method_slug":"dropout","method_name":"Dropout"},{"method_slug":"knowledge-distillation","method_name":"Knowledge Distillation"},{"method_slug":"lstm","method_name":"LSTM"},{"method_slug":"layer-normalization","method_name":"Layer Normalization"},{"method_slug":"linear-layer","method_name":"Linear Layer"},{"method_slug":"linear-warmup-with-linear-decay","method_name":"Linear Warmup With Linear Decay"},{"method_slug":"multi-head-attention","method_name":"Multi-Head Attention"},{"method_slug":"residual-connection","method_name":"Residual Connection"},{"method_slug":"seq2seq","method_name":"Seq2Seq"},{"method_slug":"sigmoid-activation","method_name":"Sigmoid Activation"},{"method_slug":"softmax","method_name":"Softmax"},{"method_slug":"tanh-activation","method_name":"Tanh Activation"},{"method_slug":"weight-decay","method_name":"Weight Decay"},{"method_slug":"wordpiece","method_name":"WordPiece"}],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":"https://syntology.ai/paper/2008.03822","atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2008.03822","mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
