Despite active DA methods address this by further proposing targetness to measure the representativeness of target domain characteristics, their predictive uncertainty is usually based on the prediction of deterministic models, which can easily be miscalibrated on data with distribution shift. Considering this, we propose a \\textit{Dirichlet-based Uncertainty Calibration} (DUC) approach for active DA, which simultaneously achieves the mitigation of miscalibration and the selection of informative target samples. Specifically, we place a Dirichlet prior on the prediction and interpret the prediction as a distribution on the probability simplex, rather than a point estimate like deterministic models. This manner enables us to consider all possible predictions, mitigating the miscalibration of unilateral prediction. Then a two-round selection strategy based on different uncertainty origins is designed to select target samples that are both representative of target domain and conducive to discriminability. Extensive experiments on cross-domain image classification and semantic segmentation validate the superiority of DUC.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2302.13824v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2302.13824v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"dirichlet-based-uncertainty-calibration-for","repo_url":"https://github.com/bit-da/duc","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"active-learning","task_name":"Active Learning"},{"task_slug":"domain-adaptation","task_name":"Domain Adaptation"},{"task_slug":"image-classification","task_name":"Image Classification"},{"task_slug":"prediction","task_name":"Prediction"},{"task_slug":"semantic-segmentation","task_name":"Semantic Segmentation"},{"task_slug":"image-classification","task_name":"image-classification"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":"https://syntology.ai/paper/2302.13824","atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2302.13824","mcp":{"get_harvested_code_for_paper":{"arxiv_id":"2302.13824"}},"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers","read_at":"2026-09-25T09:33:49+00:00","read_at_is":"when the build read Syntology's graph, not when any sample ran","claim":"Per-sample execution status on synthesized fixtures; not a correctness claim about the paper.
