In these domains illumination\nalgorithms, such as MAP-Elites, are promising alternatives to classic\noptimization algorithms because they produce diverse, high-quality solutions in\na single run, instead of only a single near-optimal solution. Unfortunately,\nthese algorithms currently require a large number of function evaluations,\nlimiting their applicability. In this article we introduce a new illumination\nalgorithm, Surrogate-Assisted Illumination (SAIL), that leverages surrogate\nmodeling techniques to create a map of the design space according to\nuser-defined features while minimizing the number of fitness evaluations. On a\n2-dimensional airfoil optimization problem SAIL produces hundreds of diverse\nbut high-performing designs with several orders of magnitude fewer evaluations\nthan MAP-Elites or CMA-ES. We demonstrate that SAIL is also capable of\nproducing maps of high-performing designs in realistic 3-dimensional\naerodynamic tasks with an accurate flow simulation. Data-efficient design\nexploration with SAIL can help designers understand what is possible, beyond\nwhat is optimal, by considering more than pure objective-based optimization.","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/1806.05865v1","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/1806.05865v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"data-efficient-design-exploration-through","repo_url":"https://github.com/Sascha0912/SAIL","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"data-efficient-design-exploration-through","repo_url":"https://github.com/agaier/sail","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":{"status":"ok","spdx":"MIT"}}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=1806.05865","mcp":{"get_harvested_code_for_paper":{"arxiv_id":"1806.05865"}},"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers","read_at":"2026-09-24T18:15:14+00:00","read_at_is":"when the build read Syntology's graph, not when any sample ran","claim":"Per-sample execution status on synthesized fixtures; not a correctness claim about the paper.
