By being situated in continuous environments, this setting lifts a number of assumptions implicit in prior work that represents environments as a sparse graph of panoramas with edges corresponding to navigability. Specifically, our setting drops the presumptions of known environment topologies, short-range oracle navigation, and perfect agent localization. To contextualize this new task, we develop models that mirror many of the advances made in prior settings as well as single-modality baselines. While some of these techniques transfer, we find significantly lower absolute performance in the continuous setting -- suggesting that performance in prior `navigation-graph' settings may be inflated by the strong implicit assumptions.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.02857v2","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2004.02857v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"beyond-the-nav-graph-vision-and-language","repo_url":"https://github.com/jacobkrantz/VLN-CE","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":{"status":"ok","spdx":"MIT"}},{"paper_slug":"beyond-the-nav-graph-vision-and-language","repo_url":"https://github.com/GT-RIPL/robo-vln","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":{"status":"ok","spdx":"MIT"}},{"paper_slug":"beyond-the-nav-graph-vision-and-language","repo_url":"https://github.com/feliciaxyao/icml2024-fstta","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"beyond-the-nav-graph-vision-and-language","repo_url":"https://github.com/feliciaxyao/navmorph","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":{"status":"ok"}},{"paper_slug":"beyond-the-nav-graph-vision-and-language","repo_url":"https://github.com/meera1hahn/NRNS","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":{"status":"ok"}}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"vision-and-language-navigation","task_name":"Vision and Language Navigation"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[{"slug":"vln-ce","name":"VLN-CE","full_name":"Vision-and-Language Navigation in Continuous Environments"}],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":"https://syntology.ai/paper/2004.02857","atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2004.02857","mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
