Chipman","Edward I. George","Robert E. McCulloch"],"abstract":"We develop a Bayesian \"sum-of-trees\" model where each tree is constrained by\na regularization prior to be a weak learner, and fitting and inference are\naccomplished via an iterative Bayesian backfitting MCMC algorithm that\ngenerates samples from a posterior. Effectively, BART is a nonparametric\nBayesian regression approach which uses dimensionally adaptive random basis\nelements. Motivated by ensemble methods in general, and boosting algorithms in\nparticular, BART is defined by a statistical model: a prior and a likelihood.\nThis approach enables full posterior inference including point and interval\nestimates of the unknown regression function as well as the marginal effects of\npotential predictors. By keeping track of predictor inclusion frequencies, BART\ncan also be used for model-free variable selection. BART's many features are\nillustrated with a bake-off against competing methods on 42 different data\nsets, with a simulation experiment and on a drug discovery classification\nproblem.","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/0806.3286v2","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/0806.3286v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"bart-bayesian-additive-regression-trees","repo_url":"https://github.com/JakeColtman/bartpy","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"bart-bayesian-additive-regression-trees","repo_url":"https://github.com/tmatcham/CausalBART","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":{"status":"unanswered"}},{"paper_slug":"bart-bayesian-additive-regression-trees","repo_url":"https://github.com/vittorioorlandi/drbart","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":{"status":"unanswered"}}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"causal-inference","task_name":"Causal Inference"},{"task_slug":"drug-discovery","task_name":"Drug Discovery"},{"task_slug":"variable-selection","task_name":"Variable Selection"},{"task_slug":"regression-1","task_name":"regression"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[{"leaderboard":"/sota/causal-inference-on-jobs","task":"Causal Inference","dataset":"Jobs","model":"BART","rank_in_archive_order":4,"of":5,"metrics":{"Average Treatment Effect on the Treated Error":"0.08"},"uses_additional_data":false}],"syntology":{"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=0806.3286","mcp":{"get_harvested_code_for_paper":{"arxiv_id":"0806.3286"}},"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers","read_at":"2026-09-24T18:15:14+00:00","read_at_is":"when the build read Syntology's graph, not when any sample ran","claim":"Per-sample execution status on synthesized fixtures; not a correctness claim about the paper.
