We propose a field of research, Automated\nGame Design Learning (AGDL), with the direct purpose of learning game designs\ndirectly through interaction with games in the mode that most people experience\ngames: via play. We detail existing work that touches the edges of this field,\ndescribe current successful projects in AGDL and the theoretical foundations\nthat enable them, point to promising applications enabled by AGDL, and discuss\nnext steps for this exciting area of study. The key moves of AGDL are to use\ngame programs as the ultimate source of truth about their own design, and to\nmake these design properties available to other systems and avenues of inquiry.","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/1707.03333v1","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/1707.03333v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"automated-game-design-learning","repo_url":"https://github.com/JoeOsborn/mechlearn","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"game-design","task_name":"Game Design"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
