Unlike most symbolization procedures, ASTRIDE is adaptive during both the segmentation step by performing change-point detection and the quantization step by using quantiles. Instead of proceeding signal by signal, ASTRIDE builds a dictionary of symbols that is common to all signals in a data set. We also introduce D-GED (Dynamic General Edit Distance), a novel similarity measure on symbolic representations based on the general edit distance. We demonstrate the performance of the ASTRIDE and FASTRIDE representations compared to SAX (Symbolic Aggregate approXimation), 1d-SAX, SFA (Symbolic Fourier Approximation), and ABBA (Adaptive Brownian Bridge-based Aggregation) on reconstruction and, when applicable, on classification tasks. These algorithms are evaluated on 86 univariate equal-size data sets from the UCR Time Series Classification Archive. An open source GitHub repository called astride is made available to reproduce all the experiments in Python.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2302.04097v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2302.04097v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"astride-adaptive-symbolization-for-time","repo_url":"https://github.com/sylvaincom/astride","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"change-point-detection","task_name":"Change Point Detection"},{"task_slug":"quantization","task_name":"Quantization"},{"task_slug":"time-series-1","task_name":"Time Series"},{"task_slug":"time-series","task_name":"Time Series Analysis"},{"task_slug":"time-series-classification","task_name":"Time Series Classification"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
