In this paper, we propose a time-frequency domain self-operational neural network (SONN) based framework, namely, AsTFSONN, to efficiently categorize asthmatic lung sound signals, which uses the SONN-based heterogeneous neural model by incorporating an additional non-linearity into the neural network architecture, unlike the vanilla convolutional neural model that uses homogeneous perceptions which resemble the fundamental linear neuron model. The proposed framework comprises three major stages: pre-processing of the input lung sounds, mel-spectrogram time-frequency representation (TFR) extraction, and finally, classification using AsTFSONN based on the mel-spectrogram images. The proposed framework supersedes the notable prior works of asthma classification based on lung sounds and other diagnostic modalities by achieving the highest accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, and ICBHI-score of 98.50%, 98.80%, 98.11%, and 98.46%, respectively, using lung sounds as the input diagnostic modality, as evaluated on publicly available chest wall lung sound dataset.","url_abs":"https://github.com/rsarka34/AsTFSONN","url_pdf":"https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/10171911","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"astfsonn-a-unified-framework-based-on-time","repo_url":"https://github.com/rsarka34/AsTFSONN","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"pytorch","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"asthmatic-lung-sound-classification","task_name":"Asthmatic Lung Sound Classification"},{"task_slug":"audio-classification","task_name":"Audio Classification"},{"task_slug":"diagnostic","task_name":"Diagnostic"},{"task_slug":"lung-disease-classification","task_name":"Lung Disease Classification"},{"task_slug":"lung-sound-classification","task_name":"Lung Sound Classification"},{"task_slug":"sound-classification","task_name":"Sound Classification"},{"task_slug":"specificity","task_name":"Specificity"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[{"leaderboard":"/sota/asthmatic-lung-sound-classification-on-chest","task":"Asthmatic Lung Sound Classification","dataset":"Chest wall lung sound dataset","model":"AsTFSONN","rank_in_archive_order":2,"of":2,"metrics":{"2-Class Accuracy":"98.50"},"uses_additional_data":false}],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
