Historically, state-of-the-art machine learning models employed various methods for detecting deceptive statements. These methods include the use of metadata (W. Wang et al., 2018), n-grams analysis (Singh et al., 2021), and linguistic (Wu et al., 2022) and stylometric (Islam et al., 2020) features. Recent advancements in large language models, such as GPT-3 (Brown et al., 2020) have achieved state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of tasks. In this study, we conducted experiments with GPT-3 on the LIAR dataset (W. Wang et al., 2018) and achieved higher accuracy than state-of-the-art models without using any additional meta or linguistic features. Additionally, we experimented with zero-shot learning using a carefully designed prompt and achieved near state-of-the-art performance. An advantage of this approach is that the model provided evidence for its decision, which adds transparency to the model's decision-making and offers a chance for users to verify the validity of the evidence provided.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.08190v1","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2306.08190v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"assessing-the-effectiveness-of-gpt-3-in","repo_url":"https://github.com/marsgokturk/gpt3-false-political-statement-detection","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":{"status":"ok","spdx":"MIT"}}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"decision-making","task_name":"Decision Making"},{"task_slug":"misinformation","task_name":"Misinformation"},{"task_slug":"zero-shot-learning","task_name":"Zero-Shot Learning"}],"methods":[{"method_slug":"adam","method_name":"Adam"},{"method_slug":"attention","method_name":"Attention"},{"method_slug":"attention-dropout","method_name":"Attention Dropout"},{"method_slug":"bpe","method_name":"BPE"},{"method_slug":"cosine-annealing","method_name":"Cosine Annealing"},{"method_slug":"dense-connections","method_name":"Dense Connections"},{"method_slug":"dropout","method_name":"Dropout"},{"method_slug":"gpt-3","method_name":"GPT-3"},{"method_slug":"layer-normalization","method_name":"Layer Normalization"},{"method_slug":"linear-layer","method_name":"Linear Layer"},{"method_slug":"linear-warmup-with-cosine-annealing","method_name":"Linear Warmup With Cosine Annealing"},{"method_slug":"multi-head-attention","method_name":"Multi-Head Attention"},{"method_slug":"residual-connection","method_name":"Residual Connection"},{"method_slug":"softmax","method_name":"Softmax"},{"method_slug":"weight-decay","method_name":"Weight Decay"}],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2306.08190","mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
