Momentum and mini-batch gradients are widely used in practical deep learning optimization, but it remains unclear whether they operate in a comparable regime of instability. We demonstrate that SGD with momentum exhibits an Edge of Stochastic Stability (EoSS)-like regime with batch-size-dependent behavior that cannot be explained by a single momentum-adjusted stability threshold. Batch Sharpness (the expected directional mini-batch curvature) stabilizes in two distinct regimes: at small batch sizes it converges to a lower plateau $2(1-β)/η$, reflecting amplification of stochastic fluctuations by momentum and favoring flatter regions than vanilla SGD; at large batch sizes it converges to a higher plateau $2(1+β)/η$, where momentum recovers its classical stabilizing effect and favors sharper regions consistent with full-batch dynamics. We further show that this aligns with linear stability thresholds and discuss the implications for hyperparameter tuning and coupling.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2604.14108","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2604.14108","source":{"archive":null,"snapshot":"2025-07-28","note":"not in the Papers with Code archive (frozen at the snapshot)","row_kind":"graph","title_abstract_authors_date":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license)"},"code_links":[],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2604.14108","mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers","read_at":"2026-09-24T18:15:14+00:00","read_at_is":"when the build read Syntology's graph, not when any sample ran","claim":"Per-sample execution status on synthesized fixtures; not a correctness claim about the paper.
