Synthetic time series generation has emerged as a promising approach to address these limitations. In this work, we investigate the use of complex network mappings for synthetic time series generation, focusing on the Quantile Graph (QG) representation and its inverse. While the inverse QG mapping has been previously proposed, its potential as a general-purpose data generator has not been systematically evaluated. We address this gap through a comprehensive empirical study assessing both the fidelity and utility of synthetic time series generated by the Inverse Quantile Graph (InvQG) framework. The evaluation combines statistical feature analysis, network-based topological characteristics, and performance in downstream clustering and classification tasks, using simulated and real-world datasets. The results show that InvQG effectively preserves marginal distributions and short-term temporal dependencies across a wide range of models, while exhibiting predictable limitations in capturing long-range or higher-order dynamics.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2601.22879","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2601.22879","source":{"archive":null,"snapshot":"2025-07-28","note":"not in the Papers with Code archive (frozen at the snapshot)","row_kind":"graph","title_abstract_authors_date":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license)"},"code_links":[],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=2601.22879","mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers","read_at":"2026-09-24T18:15:14+00:00","read_at_is":"when the build read Syntology's graph, not when any sample ran","claim":"Per-sample execution status on synthesized fixtures; not a correctness claim about the paper.
