This article focuses on a new method for approximating posterior distributions of a low- to moderate-dimensional parameter in the presence of a high-dimensional or otherwise computationally challenging nuisance parameter. The focus is on regression models and the key idea is to separate the likelihood into two components through a rotation. One component involves only the nuisance parameters, which can then be integrated out using a novel type of Gaussian approximation. We provide theory on approximation accuracy that holds for a broad class of forms of the nuisance component and priors. Applying our method to simulated and real data sets shows that it can outperform state-of-the-art posterior approximation approaches.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1909.06753v2","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/1909.06753v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"links_only","authors_date_abstract":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license), from the Kaggle arXiv metadata snapshot of 2026-09-12"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"approximating-posteriors-with-high","repo_url":"https://github.com/willemvandenboom/IRGA","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
