Yet, little is known about how information flows through these networks and whether they are indeed properly designed for the tasks they are being proposed for. In this paper, we employ information-theoretic tools in order to gain insight into information flow through U-Nets. In particular, we show how mutual information between input/output and an intermediate layer can be a useful tool to understand information flow through various portions of a U-Net, assess its architectural efficiency, and even propose more efficient designs.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2101.08427v2","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/2101.08427v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"analysis-of-information-flow-through-u-nets","repo_url":"https://github.com/Suemin-Lee/MI_Unet","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"tf","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"image-segmentation","task_name":"Image Segmentation"},{"task_slug":"semantic-segmentation","task_name":"Semantic Segmentation"}],"methods":[{"method_slug":"concatenated-skip-connection","method_name":"Concatenated Skip Connection"},{"method_slug":"convolution","method_name":"Convolution"},{"method_slug":"max-pooling","method_name":"Max Pooling"},{"method_slug":"relu","method_name":"ReLU"},{"method_slug":"u-net","method_name":"U-Net"}],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
