These signals can be recorded\nwhile reading. Cognitive language processing data such as eye-tracking features\nhave shown improvements on single NLP tasks. We analyze whether using such\nhuman features can show consistent improvement across tasks and data sources.\nWe present an extensive investigation of the benefits and limitations of using\ncognitive processing data for NLP. Specifically, we use gaze and EEG features\nto augment models of named entity recognition, relation classification, and\nsentiment analysis. These methods significantly outperform the baselines and\nshow the potential and current limitations of employing human language\nprocessing data for NLP.","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/1904.02682v1","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/1904.02682v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"advancing-nlp-with-cognitive-language","repo_url":"https://github.com/DS3Lab/ner-at-first-sight","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":{"status":"ok"}},{"paper_slug":"advancing-nlp-with-cognitive-language","repo_url":"https://github.com/DS3Lab/zuco-nlp","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":1,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"advancing-nlp-with-cognitive-language","repo_url":"https://github.com/chippybautista/zuco-sentiment-analysis","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"pytorch","reach":{"status":"ok"}}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"eeg-1","task_name":"EEG"},{"task_slug":"eeg","task_name":"Electroencephalogram (EEG)"},{"task_slug":"classification","task_name":"General Classification"},{"task_slug":"named-entity-recognition-1","task_name":"Named Entity Recognition"},{"task_slug":"named-entity-recognition-ner","task_name":"Named Entity Recognition (NER)"},{"task_slug":"relation-classification","task_name":"Relation Classification"},{"task_slug":"sentiment-analysis","task_name":"Sentiment Analysis"},{"task_slug":"named-entity-recognition","task_name":"named-entity-recognition"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=1904.02682","mcp":{"get_harvested_code_for_paper":{"arxiv_id":"1904.02682"}},"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers","read_at":"2026-09-24T18:15:14+00:00","read_at_is":"when the build read Syntology's graph, not when any sample ran","claim":"Per-sample execution status on synthesized fixtures; not a correctness claim about the paper.
