Here we introduce a new\nclass of spike train metrics, inspired by the Pompeiu-Hausdorff distance, and\ncompare them with existing metrics. Some of our new metrics (the modulus-metric\nand the max-metric) have characteristics that are qualitatively different than\nthose of classical metrics like the van Rossum distance or the Victor & Purpura\ndistance. The modulus-metric and the max-metric are particularly suitable for\nmeasuring distances between spike trains where information is encoded in\nbursts, but the number and the timing of spikes inside a burst does not carry\ninformation. The modulus-metric does not depend on any parameters and can be\ncomputed using a fast algorithm, in a time that depends linearly on the number\nof spikes in the two spike trains. We also introduce localized versions of the\nnew metrics, which could have the biologically-relevant interpretation of\nmeasuring the differences between spike trains as they are perceived at a\nparticular moment in time by a neuron receiving these spike trains.","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/1209.2918v3","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/1209.2918v3.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"a-new-class-of-metrics-for-spike-trains","repo_url":"https://github.com/modulus-metric/spike-train-metrics","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"a-new-class-of-metrics-for-spike-trains","repo_url":"https://github.com/rist-ro/modulus-metric","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"a-new-class-of-metrics-for-spike-trains","repo_url":"https://github.com/rist-ro/spike-train-metrics","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"syntology_url":null,"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
