We investigate the way dialogue act corpora are annotated and\nthe learning approaches used so far. We find that the dialogue act is\ncontext-sensitive within the conversation for most of the classes.\nNevertheless, previous models of dialogue act classification work on the\nutterance-level and only very few consider context. We propose a novel\ncontext-based learning method to classify dialogue acts using a character-level\nlanguage model utterance representation, and we notice significant improvement.\nWe evaluate this method on the Switchboard Dialogue Act corpus, and our results\nshow that the consideration of the preceding utterances as a context of the\ncurrent utterance improves dialogue act detection.","url_abs":"http://arxiv.org/abs/1805.06280v1","url_pdf":"http://arxiv.org/pdf/1805.06280v1.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"a-context-based-approach-for-dialogue-act","repo_url":"https://github.com/bothe/dialogue-act-recognition","is_official":1,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":0,"framework":"none","reach":{"status":"ok"}}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"dialogue-act-classification","task_name":"Dialogue Act Classification"},{"task_slug":"classification","task_name":"General Classification"},{"task_slug":"language-modeling","task_name":"Language Modeling"},{"task_slug":"language-modelling","task_name":"Language Modelling"},{"task_slug":"natural-language-understanding","task_name":"Natural Language Understanding"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[{"leaderboard":"/sota/dialogue-act-classification-on-switchboard","task":"Dialogue Act Classification","dataset":"Switchboard corpus","model":"RNN with 3 utterances in context","rank_in_archive_order":10,"of":11,"metrics":{"Accuracy":"77.34"},"uses_additional_data":false}],"syntology":{"syntology_url":"https://syntology.ai/paper/1805.06280","atlas_url":"https://app.syntology.ai/?focus=1805.06280","mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
