When used on real instrumental data, matched filtering often does not perform as well as might be expected, because non-stationary and non-Gaussian detector noise produces large spurious filter outputs (events). This paper describes a chi-squared time-frequency test which is one way to discriminate such spurious events from the events that would be produced by genuine signals. The method works well only for broad-band signals. The case where the filter template does not exactly match the signal waveform is also considered, and upper bounds are found for the expected value of chi-squared.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/gr-qc/0405045v2","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/gr-qc/0405045v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"links_only","authors_date_abstract":"arXiv metadata, CC0 1.0 (https://info.arxiv.org/help/license), from the Kaggle arXiv metadata snapshot of 2026-09-12"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"a-chi-squared-time-frequency-discriminator","repo_url":"https://github.com/gwastro/1-ogc","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"a-chi-squared-time-frequency-discriminator","repo_url":"https://github.com/gwastro/2-ogc","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"a-chi-squared-time-frequency-discriminator","repo_url":"https://github.com/gwastro/3-ogc","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"a-chi-squared-time-frequency-discriminator","repo_url":"https://github.com/gwastro/eccentric-bns-search","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"none","reach":null}],"tasks":[],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
