In this paper, we develop a novel deep neural network, named LPD-Net (Large-scale Place Description Network), which can extract discriminative and generalizable global descriptors from the raw 3D point cloud. Two modules, the adaptive local feature extraction module and the graph-based neighborhood aggregation module, are proposed, which contribute to extract the local structures and reveal the spatial distribution of local features in the large-scale point cloud, with an end-to-end manner. We implement the proposed global descriptor in solving point cloud based retrieval tasks to achieve the large-scale place recognition. Comparison results show that our LPD-Net is much better than PointNetVLAD and reaches the state-of-the-art. We also compare our LPD-Net with the vision-based solutions to show the robustness of our approach to different weather and light conditions.","url_abs":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.07050v2","url_pdf":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/1812.07050v2.pdf","source":{"archive":"pwc-archive (Hugging Face), CC BY-SA 4.0","snapshot":"2025-07-28","licence_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode","row_kind":"abstracts"},"code_links":[{"paper_slug":"181207050","repo_url":"https://github.com/Suoivy/LPD-net","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"tf","reach":null},{"paper_slug":"181207050","repo_url":"https://github.com/qiaozhijian/LPD-Net-Pytorch","is_official":0,"mentioned_in_paper":0,"mentioned_in_github":1,"framework":"tf","reach":null}],"tasks":[{"task_slug":"3d-place-recognition","task_name":"3D Place Recognition"},{"task_slug":null,"task_name":"Point Cloud Retrieval"},{"task_slug":"retrieval","task_name":"Retrieval"},{"task_slug":"visual-place-recognition","task_name":"Visual Place Recognition"}],"methods":[],"datasets_introduced":[],"methods_introduced":[],"results":[{"leaderboard":"/sota/3d-place-recognition-on-cs-campus3d","task":"3D Place Recognition","dataset":"CS-Campus3D","model":"LPD-Net","rank_in_archive_order":5,"of":7,"metrics":{"AR@1":"45.94","AR@1 cross-source":"11.99","AR@1%":"59.49","AR@1% cross-source":"40.70"},"uses_additional_data":false},{"leaderboard":"/sota/3d-place-recognition-on-oxford-robotcar","task":"3D Place Recognition","dataset":"Oxford RobotCar Dataset","model":"LPD-Net","rank_in_archive_order":5,"of":10,"metrics":{"AR@1":"86.3","AR@1%":"94.9"},"uses_additional_data":false}],"syntology":{"atlas_url":null,"mcp":null,"developers":"https://syntology.ai/developers"},"arxiv_metadata":null,"syntology_extracted_results":null}
